Yep, tonight Haggis will be addressed and eaten all over the world to celebrate the life of Robert Burns, poet and Scottish icon. Some of his works include Auld Land Syne and Scots Waa Hee. This is an exceptional year as it is the 250th anniversary of his birth.  For those of you that are unaware, here’s a little education piece. Traditionally before haggis is served it is addessed with a wee poem:

Address to a Haggis

Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin’-race!
Aboon them a’ ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang’s my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o need,
While thro your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An cut you up wi ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like onie ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reekin, rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an strive:
Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive,
Till a’ their weel-swall’d kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
The auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
‘Bethankit’ hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout,
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
Wi perfect sconner,
Looks down wi sneering, scornfu view
On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
As feckless as a wither’d rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip-lash,
His nieve a nit:
Thro bloody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit!

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
He’ll make it whissle;
An legs an arms, an heads will sned,
Like taps o thrissle.

Ye Pow’rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies:
But, if ye wish her gratefu prayer,
Gie her a Haggis!

I’ve heard of slap happy, I’ve even witnessed a slap in exchange for champagne:

But a slap of this caliber is a first!

Jay Nguyen, chief executive of Sweemo.com, an online marketplace, has launched a great bit of viral marketing over here! Here’s what’s involved:

  • an online auction
  • a 7kg raw Salmon
  • a offline slap in the face

You’ve probably worked it out but let me fill in the blanks. Sweemo is an online marketplace where users can bid on, exchange or swap Sweet Moments. For example, a free backstage pass at your band’s next gig, a training session with your football team, or the opportunity to smack the Sweemo CEO in the face with a 7kg Salmon!

The slap will take place in Trafalgar Square (transport and accommodation provided) on Dec 17th and Web User has already stated they’ll be there reporting on the event. The Sweemo Event! The auction is at £213 with 49 bidders and 1 day to go!

So get bidding and get slapping, you know you wanna…

I have a sneaking suspicion that tonight would be a good night for some of that Google security they’ve been talking about, but for text messages… mobiles at the ready!

So, I saw my first news article on the upcoming 138th St. Andrew’s Day, Nov 30th. Imagine my surprise when it was in my ex-local rag… The Winnipeg Free Press! How did that happen?

Turns out we will be flying the Saltire, Scotland’s national flag above Winnipeg City Hall to celebrate the country’s patron saint, St. Andrew.

Hmm, that’s more than I can say I’m doing to celebrate, I’ll be down in Cockermouth, ENGLAND! Don’t tell anyone.

Have a good weekend and Happy St. Andrews Day! Slaandjivaa!
